Breaking: Everything You Need to Know About Where Heartland Was Filmed
The fictional town of Hudson, Alberta, functions as the civic heart of the series. Characters run errands, drink coffee, and resolve community disputes on quiet paved streets flanked by historic brick and timber storefronts. In reality, Hudson is High River, Alberta, a municipality situated roughly 40 miles south of downtown Calgary.
When location scouts arrived in High River prior to filming season one, they sought an authentic western character that would look grounded on camera. The town’s 3rd Avenue SW provided the exact historic framework needed. Crews quickly adapted local storefronts into permanent fixtures of the show's world, integrating practical businesses with the production schedule.
The most famous exterior in town is Maggie's Diner filming site, located at 123 3rd Avenue SW. Production designers maintained the venue as an exterior set and staging area rather than a functioning restaurant. Fans routinely line up outside to photograph the vintage signs, weathered wood trim, and dressed display windows. The local business association estimates that screen tourism generates consistent foot traffic year-round, drawing visitors from the United States, Europe, and Australia to local cafes and western apparel shops.
