Bolsonaro Family Dynasty: How Jailed Ex-President's Relatives Dominated the Latest Election
Charisma alone does not win thousands of municipal council seats. The institutional foundation of this victory was the enormous war chest of the Liberal Party, guided by veteran party chairman Valdemar Costa Neto. Thanks to its strong showing in previous legislative races, the PL commanded the largest share of Brazil’s multi-billion-real public electoral fund.
The party leadership recognized that their best return on investment was the Bolsonaro family. Rather than spreading campaign funding equally among regional candidates, the PL directed substantial capital to races where family members made personal appearances. A single visit from Michelle or Eduardo accompanied substantial television advertising buys, overwhelming underfunded local opponents.
This financial alliance created a symbiotic relationship between party bosses and the dynastic inner circle. Costa Neto provided the ballot lines, the legal defense resources, and the television airtime. In exchange, the Bolsonaro relatives supplied the raw voter enthusiasm that no traditional party bureaucrat could summon. The result was an efficient campaign machine that out-organized traditional centrist parties and pushed the leftist governing coalition out of several ancestral municipal bastions.
