Once your mobile app flashes a green confirmation checkmark, do not throw the paper check in the trash. Digital scans are provisional until the paying bank officially releases the funds across clearinghouse networks.
Store the paper check in a secure folder for 14 to 30 days, depending on your bank's specific account agreement. During this interim window, write "Mobile deposit completed on [Date]" across the top front face of the check in light pencil, keeping the MICR routing numbers at the bottom pristine. This prevents accidental double deposits by family members or bookkeepers.
After your account statement confirms final settlement and the designated holding period expires, destroy the paper document with a cross-cut shredder.
