Avicii’s Secret Rehab Journals: What His Own Hand Written Words Reveal About His Demise
During his 2015 stay at Ibiza Calm, an elite psychiatric and addiction facility in the Balearic Islands, Bergling turned to notebook paper to process the abyss between his international stage persona and his crumbling inner world. His therapists instructed him to log his sensations, emotional triggers, and recurring nightmares. What emerged was a portrait of a young man alienated from his own nervous system.
In one widely cited passage uncovered by Mosesson, Bergling confronted the harsh adjustment of detoxing after years of drinking and pain medication. "I had a hard time accepting never drinking again though was strongly suggested from all doctors to wait at least a year before even having a beer," he wrote. "Of course, I didn't listen to the majority of the doctors, I listened to the couple who said it was okay if I was careful. I was ignorant and naive and touring the world, still on the endless tour."
The entries lay bare the psychological toll of performance anxiety. Bergling had discovered early in his career that a couple of gin and tonics took the edge off opening sets in front of 40,000 screaming fans. That coping mechanism gradually warped into heavy daily alcohol consumption, followed by industrial doses of prescription painkillers when physical illnesses took hold. In rehab, stripped of artificial chemical buffers, he felt defenseless against his underlying dread.
