Laura Marano played Ally Dawson, the stage-frightened musical prodigy who ghostwrote Austin's hits before stepping into the spotlight herself. Marano had worked as an experienced child actress on series like Without a Trace and Back to You before landing the Disney lead. Following the show's end, she made a calculated decision to maintain creative ownership over her art.

Rather than signing restrictive deals with major recording houses, Marano released music independently through her imprint, Flip Phone Records. Her extended plays, including ME (2019), YOU (2020), and US (2022), charted her growth into adult contemporary pop. She financed national headlining tours herself, proving that an active, loyal fanbase could sustain an independent music career without corporate backing.

On screen, Marano found a massive audience within Netflix's romantic comedy revival. She starred opposite Noah Centineo in The Perfect Date (2019), which drew 48 million viewers in its first four weeks. Marano stepped up as both lead actress and executive producer on The Royal Treatment (2022) and Netflix's interactive romantic comedy Choose Love (2023), establishing herself as an astute dual creative in Hollywood's streaming era.
