Audition Scams Vs. Legitimate Casting: How to Safely Audition for Real Movies
Self-taping is the global standard for initial feature film auditions. When a casting director assigns audition sides, their notification includes explicit submission guidelines: framing constraints, file naming conventions, deadline windows, and slate instructions.
A high-grade self-tape does not require thousands of dollars in camera gear. Modern smartphones shoot at resolutions that exceed standard playback requirements. The real technical differentiators are sound, lighting, and performance focus:
Clean Audio: Built-in microphone audio creates room echo that pulls casting directors out of the scene. Use a wired or wireless lavalier microphone pinned to your collar, setting audio input levels to peak around -12dB to avoid clipping.
Diffused Lighting: Avoid overhead ceiling bulbs that cast shadows under the eyes. Set a simple three-point lighting setup or place a single ring light or softbox directly behind the camera at eye level, backed by a solid neutral background in slate blue, gray, or muted earth tones.
The Reader and Eyeline: Never look directly down the camera barrel unless the director explicitly asks for a direct-to-lens address. Position an off-camera reader inches to the left or right of the camera lens. The reader must speak quietly and neutrally, giving you clear conversational cues without overpowering your audio track.
