Attack on Titan Complete Watch Guide: Exactly Where Season 2 Fits In
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
Watching the franchise strictly through numbered television seasons causes newcomers to miss vital foundational lore. Isayama worked closely with the production committee to ensure certain direct-to-video releases carried direct canon authority.
The most indispensable side story is the OVA titled Ilse's Notebook: Notes from a Scout Regiment Member. Released originally with manga volume 12, this episode depicts a stranded scout who encounters an abnormal Titan that bows and speaks coherent human words: "People of Ymir." Watching this entry directly before starting Season 2 unlocks the deeper subtext behind the talking Titan encounters and establishes Ymir’s secret identity long before the military uncovers it. Conversely, the two-part prequel No Regrets, which documents Captain Levi Ackerman’s recruitment by Erwin Smith, should be completed before Season 2 to provide emotional weight to Levi’s tactical decisions while recovering from his ankle injury.
