Apple Finally Adds Custom iMessage Backgrounds: What iOS 26 Quietly Changed
The new configuration process operates inside individual conversation panes rather than global system settings. The update avoids cluttering top-level iOS menus by nesting the controls directly into contact sheets.
To assign an image or preset backdrop to an active thread in the iOS 26 beta environment, follow these steps:
First, open the Messages app and select the individual or group conversation you wish to modify. Tap the contact icon or group avatar positioned at the top center of the screen to open the thread management panel.
Second, locate the new Chat Wallpaper card, situated just beneath the shared photos and links carousel. Tapping this card presents three specific aesthetic choices: curated Apple gradients, solid color washes, or direct selection from your Photos library.
Third, once an image is chosen, use pinch gestures to position and crop the focal point. The operating system offers a slider to adjust background blur intensity and a dimming slider ranging from 0% to 75%, ensuring text elements remain readable. Tap Done in the upper right corner to lock the setting.
The resulting visual treatment applies immediately to the selected conversation. In its current beta deployment, the background is client-side only by default: your chosen graphic remains visible exclusively on your device unless you toggle the new "Share Wallpaper Theme" option, which transmits an asset link to recipients also running iOS 26.
