Patrick Sleeping Meme Template: High-Res Screengrabs and Original Episode Clips
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
Pinpointing the original episode clip behind the meme requires untangling several classic SpongeBob SquarePants episodes. Over the show's golden era, the animation team animated Patrick asleep in his rock numerous times, generating distinct screengrabs that internet culture frequently conflates.
The primary clip lighting up modern feeds comes from Season 2, Episode 35b, "The Secret Box" (original airdate: September 7, 2001). At approximately the 07:42 mark, SpongeBob attempts to sneak into Patrick's rock late at night to view the contents of the titular secret box. The camera cuts to Patrick snoring aggressively in his bed. Seconds later, his alarm clock sounds, triggering his legendary line: "Oh boy, 3 AM!" He eats a Krabby Patty and collapses straight back into comatose sleep at 08:03.
A second major variant originates in Season 1, Episode 5b, "Home Sweet Pineapple" (original airdate: August 14, 1999). Around the 04:15 mark, after SpongeBob's house is devoured by nematodes, he bunked with Patrick. Viewers are treated to Patrick sleeping face-up on his back, snoring with his tongue hanging completely sideways while his rock roof rests directly over his body. This clip remains the definitive ancestor of the modern reaction image.
A third recognizable still comes from Season 3, Episode 49b, "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve" (original airdate: March 29, 2002). In this domestic parody, Patrick acts as the negligent father watching television and sleeping in his armchair while SpongeBob tends to a baby clam. At the 05:20 mark, Patrick's slack-jawed slumber serves as the ultimate punchline for domestic weaponized incompetence.
