All Inside out Characters Explained: Full Roster, Cast Details, and Their New Hockey Island Roles
When Riley entered high school preparation camps, an orange cyclone named Anxiety upended Headquarters. Voiced with breathless intensity by Maya Hawke, Anxiety represents future-oriented panic. Unlike Fear, who guards against things Riley can see, Anxiety plans for ten steps ahead, scripting catastrophic scenarios to protect Riley from social isolation. Hawke’s frantic, sympathetic vocal performance struck an immediate chord with viewers, turning Anxiety into a modern cultural touchstone.
Working in tandem with Anxiety is Envy, voiced by Ayo Edebiri. Compact, wide-eyed, and perpetually captivated by what everyone else has, Envy is not malicious. Instead, Edebiri plays her as aspirational yearning, a driving desire to fit in, possess cool equipment, and earn the validation of older varsity teammates.
To balance out the frantic energy of Anxiety and Envy, Pixar introduced Ennui, voiced by French actress Adèle Exarchopoulos. Lounging perpetually on a sofa with an iPhone, Ennui controls the console via a mobile app, delivering calculated teenage apathy to shield Riley from looking desperate.
The physical counterweight to this trio is Embarrassment, voiced through muffled grunts, sighs, and hesitations by Paul Walter Hauser. Towering, soft-spoken, and permanently zipped inside a pink hoodie, Embarrassment wants only to hide under his hood. Hauser infuses the lumbering character with touching sweetness, particularly in his quiet alliance with Sadness.
