Opposite Baldwin was Geena Davis as Barbara Maitland. Born on January 21, 1956, Davis was 31 years old during filming and 32 when the movie hit screens. That two-year age gap between Davis and Baldwin reversed the standard Hollywood casting convention of pairing older men with younger women.

Davis brought crucial credibility to the supernatural pairing. Fresh off David Cronenberg’s body-horror triumph *The Fly* (1986), she possessed the tonal balance required to navigate genuine terror alongside deadpan domestic comedy. The Maitlands worked because they felt like authentic, settled New England newlyweds who simply wanted to wallpaper their hallway and build model towns in peace. Their domestic innocence provided the essential contrast against the chaotic, decaying underworld awaiting them across the threshold.
