Far from living a closeted life, West maintained an open romantic history that spanned more than sixty years in the public eye. Born in Walla Walla, Washington, in 1928, West began his adult life pursuing conventional domesticity before finding fame on the screen.

His first marriage took place in 1950, when he married his college sweetheart, Billie Lou Yeager. The young couple remained together for six years and had two children, Jon and Kellee. The marriage dissolved in 1956 as West shifted his professional aspirations toward the entertainment world, moving his base of operations from the Pacific Northwest toward Hawaii and eventually southern California.

In 1957, West married Ngatokorua Dawson, a Tahitian dancer whom he met while working in television production and local entertainment broadcasting in Honolulu. West’s time in Hawaii served as his creative launchpad, bringing him to the attention of Warner Bros. scouts who signed him to a studio contract.

The stabilizing relationship of his life arrived in November 1970, when West married Marcelle Tagand Lear. Lear had previously been married to aviation pioneer Bill Lear’s son, John Lear. West and Marcelle remained married for over 46 years until West’s death in June 2017. Together, they raised West's four children alongside Marcelle’s two children from her previous marriage, Moya and Nina. In memoirs and long-form retrospectives, including his 2017 obituary in The Guardian, West routinely credited Marcelle with pulling him out of heavy drinking and emotional distress following the cancellation of Batman.
