The partnership between Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal did not begin in a rehearsal studio or an art school seminar. It started by chance at London's South Kensington tube station in 1994. Although both had attended the American International School of Luxembourg, they moved in entirely separate social circles. Molko was the theater-obsessed outsider; Olsdal was a tall, athletic basketball player.

Their London reunion sparked an immediate creative dialogue. Molko invited Olsdal to watch him perform acoustic sets at local pubs. Olsdal recognized something distinct in Molko’s nasal, expressive voice and unconventional open tunings. Soon, Olsdal brought his classical training and heavy bass aesthetic into the fold. Together with drummer Robert Schultzberg, and later Steve Hewitt, they formed Placebo, building a sound positioned somewhere between Sonic Youth's noise experiments and Depeche Mode's dark electronic pop.

Their timing was deliberately provocative. As Britpop celebrated nostalgic, working-class masculinity, Placebo brought the dark, voyeuristic energy of 1970s glam and 1980s post-punk. Molko openly identified as bisexual, while Olsdal was out as a gay man from the inception of the band. In 1996, that honesty was considered commercial suicide by major labels. For Molko and Olsdal, it was simply non-negotiable.
