Death Note: Why Did Mello Kidnap Takada and Die? Everything Fans Need to Know
Mello's death did not end his involvement in the Kira investigation; it catalyzed its resolution. Up until episode 35, Near had fallen directly into Light's trap. Light had instructed his proxy prosecutor, Teru Mikami, to carry a fake Death Note in public while carrying out daily executions, while Takada received individual sheets to execute criminals from behind the scenes. Near had discovered Mikami's public notebook, altered its pages, and believed he possessed the upper hand.
Had Mello not kidnapped Takada, Near would have walked straight into the execution chamber Light built for him. But the kidnapping introduced total chaos:
| Phase | Event & Character Action | Strategic Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Crisis Trigger | Mello abducts Kiyomi Takada; Matt is killed by security details. | Light and Mikami are isolated from one another without communication. |
| Takada's Defense | Takada writes Mihael Keehl on a concealed Death Note fragment. | Mello dies instantly inside the truck cab from cardiac arrest. |
| Mikami's Panic | Believing Light cannot act, Mikami visits his bank deposit box. | Mikami breaks his strict daily routine to write Takada's name in the real book. |
| SPK Counter-Play | Stephen Gevanni tracks Mikami to the bank vault overnight. | Near swaps the real notebook, exposing Kira's complete operational setup. |
When Takada was taken, Light Yagami used a hidden sliver of paper inside his wristwatch to write Takada's name, scheduling her death alongside a fire that burned the truck and Mello's body. However, Teru Mikami did not know Light could act freely under surveillance. Panicking, Mikami deviated from his rigorous daily schedule, visited his safety deposit box at the bank, and retrieved the genuine Death Note to execute Takada himself.
That deviation was fatal. SPK investigator Stephen Gevanni followed Mikami into the bank, discovered the actual murder weapon, and replaced every single page of the real book with forged replicas. Without Mello's interference, Mikami never visits the bank, Near tampers only with a decoy, and Kira annihilates the entire SPK and Task Force at the warehouse.
